Ph.D. in Mathematics

Program Purpose

The Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics provides the student with advanced graduate training in mathematics. In addition to coursework, PhD students write a thesis containing an original contribution worthy of publication in research journal. The PhD students work prepares them for employment in the mathematics profession in academia, in government, in business or in industry.

Learning Outcomes

  • The Doctor of Philosophy of mathematics student will demonstrate an ability to develop a

    research proposal and carry out independent research.

  • Upon graduation, our PhD students will demonstrate understanding of the theoretical foundations

    and computational techniques of their subject and will be able to apply these concepts and tools to solve

    a wide variety of problems in at least one area of specialization within mathematics.

  • Upon graduation, our PhD students will have a in-depth understanding and mastery of the literature

    in at least one particular subfield of mathematics. Applied mathematicians will also demonstrate mastery

    of their area of application.

  • Upon graduation, our PhD students will demonstrate an ability to present and defend research work in

    oral, written and graphic forms.

  • Upon graduation, our PhD students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively as team members.
  • Upon graduation, our PhD students will demonstrate an understanding of their professional and ethical

    responsibilities and appreciation of the impact of mathematics in the societal context.
