M.Phil. in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Program Purpose

The master of philosophy degree program prepares students to be scientific and technical specialists in a topical area within the broadly defined field of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry. Training afforded by the program intends to impart up-to-date research and effective communication skills to participants for them to contribute as professionals to either the industrial or the post-secondary education missions of the pharmaceutics field. Students successful in obtaining the M.Phil. degree should be prepared for a range of post-baccalaureate research or technical positions in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors, or to participate as educators in academic or professional pre-baccalaureate programs.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate a broad understanding of basic biomedical, chemical and physical sciences underlying the field of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry;
  • demonstrate competency in current methods of modern drug delivery, drug stability, drug in vivo behaviors and therapeutic action, and formulation strategies to optimize therapeutic benefits;
  • be able to identify, compile, analyze, and assess technical, scientific and health-care related information from a variety of sources and perspectives;
  • be able to apply critical thinking and analytical skills to formulate a technical critique and express that argument clearly and cogently both orally and in writing;
  • demonstrate effective technical communication skills necessary to understand, contribute and participate in professional discussions and forums;
  • exhibit problem-solving competency in modern issues of drug delivery, pharmaceutics and translational biomedical research;
  • be prepared for technical support or research positions in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors, or as educators in academic or professional pre-baccalaureate programs;
  • possess the research skills and practical techniques required to support the design, testing and implementation of modern pharmaceutical methods, assays, technologies, and innovative therapeutics.
