M.Phil. in Special Education

Program Purpose

The mission of the program is to prepare competent professionals and citizen advocates to serve individuals with disabilities and their families in educational and community settings. If participants are also teacher candidates the program is designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to create improvements in the education and lives of individuals with disabilities. Participants who are already educational professionals will acquire enhanced skills in relevant areas such as assessment, instruction, and collaboration. This will prepare them to assume leadership roles in their schools, school districts, and other community settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants who are also teacher candidates will be able to:

    understand the historical and legal factors that have contributed to the current educational context for student with disabilities and their families.

    conduct appropriate assessments and determine student learning needs.

    develop and implement appropriate instructional programming for students using empirically validated strategies.

    collect data on student performance and make data-based decisions about instructional modifications.

    communicate and collaborate effectively with professional colleagues and parents and family members to maximize positive outcomes for students.

    continue to stay abreast of current research and developments in relevant fields and apply that knowledge to their current practice.

  • In addition to the above, or for participants who are already educational professionals, participants will be able to:

    provide leadership to school and district teams in relevant areas such as improving assessment, instruction, and collaborative practices.

    assume supervisory roles in schools and districts in supporting teachers and other professionals in their professional practice.

    provide ongoing inservice training and support regarding advancements in professional practice to school and district professionals.
