Program Purpose

The graduate program in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah prepares metallurgical engineers with a sound knowledge and training in their chosen area of research in Metallurgical Engineering and broad technical knowledge to transition to new research areas for engineering careers in industry, academia and government. The program also emphasizes development of critical thinking abilities, ability to solve engineering problems, interpersonal skills, communication skills, life long learning, social consciousness, and integrity.

Learning Outcomes

  • an Ability to conduct independent research, generate novel ideas, design and execute a research program
  • made scholarly contribution to the selected area of research as evidenced by the publication of at least two peer-reviewed papers in journals, transactions, or proceedings.
  • demonstrate expertise in their selected area of research that is comparable or exceeds that of the members of the supervisory committee
  • an ability to effectively communicate the results of their research.
